Moleskine Dump

I have been meaning to post some snippets of my Moleskine and just… haven’t yet, so here are a few of my favorite pages!

One of my quarantine projects has been helping my mom clean out my grandma’s apartment. Since she was pretty into hoarding, she has a wealth of really beautiful old books (among many, many other things). I’ve been incorporating some little pieces of an old songbook into my journal, like on the page above with one of our first poems from Dickinson.

I have been thinking a lot about bread lately. I’ve noticed a general impulse during quarantine to revert to older ways — no one drives anymore; some neighbors are line-drying their clothes. And people are making their own bread. I relate and subscribe to the impulse of simplicity. Bread is so predictable, and so comforting. As Dickinson writes, bread “is plenty! Is enough!” — in quarantine, maybe that’s true. At any rate, I wasn’t able to find any yeast in the stores here, so my girlfriend mailed me some. Yesterday I baked a couple of loaves with a packet of this cross-country yeast (it was pretty good!). I stuck the paper wrapper into my journal, along with some more songbook illustrations, the Dickinson poem on bread, and my own sappy musing.

Because I have just so much time on my hands, I’ve been walking around my neighborhood often, and everywhere I see something missing. One of the things I miss most about is fruit. If you walk almost anywhere, you’re guaranteed to see a fruit cart with a rainbow umbrella. This page is based off of a song (Límon y Sal by Julieta Venegas) that reminds me of fruit dripping with lime and salt and tajín.
